5 questions for Mallory Tuttle, Newport News Center associate director
What’s your favorite way to start the day?
I enjoy a quick (but peaceful) shower followed by snuggles with my two daughters, and all the coffee.
What is the last thing that you binge-watched and why did it grab you?
I have been watching all of the new ESPN 30 for 30 series including The Last Dance, Lance, Be Water, Long Gone Summer, etc. I enjoy a good documentary any day but add in sports and I’m game for endless binge-watching.
What is the last book you couldn’t put down?
I’m in a “book club” and we recently finished reading “Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate. The fictional novel is heart-wrenching and is based on real-life events of kidnapping, illegal adoption and a corrupt orphanage. It’s not light reading, but the story is very compelling.
What was your first job?
I grew up in Newsoms, Virginia, a small, rural town that is known as the “Home of the Jumbo Peanut.” My first job was packing peanuts at my hometown peanut shop. Salted, salted in the shell, roasted in the shell, redskins, chocolate covered, peanut squares, peanut brittle, etc. I packed it all. The best part was the endless supply of peanuts (I never got hungry on the job). The worst part of the gig was driving the company van that didn’t have power steering on winding back roads to make local deliveries.
Do you have a favorite place to spend time off?
I enjoy going to the Outer Banks with my family to spend time away from home. There is something about driving across the Wright Brother Memorial Bridge: time slows down, a weight is lifted off your shoulders, and life becomes more simple.
